No other Bollywood actress has influenced the collective consciousness of a star-struck nation as much as Madhuri Dixit-Nene has. She may have quit the film industry to become a mother and homemaker in the US, but her return to Mumbai after a decade to kick-start her second innings in the industry is an indication that her star power hasn’t diminished yet.

No sooner did she return earlier this month than she was signed as the new brand ambassador for Olay — a brand that was earlier endorsed by Kajol and Karisma Kapoor — as well as an NGO called Emeralds for Elephants. Talks are also on about her signing the sequel to Ishqiya and the film’s director Abhishek Chaubey is said to have had a meeting with her last week. She may also judge the next season of Jhalak Dikhlaa Jaa and is also seen endorsing products like basmati rice and fabric conditioners.

It’s official now! Madhuri Dixit-Nene is the leading lady of Dedh Ishqiya, the sequel to debutant director Abhishek Chaubey’s critically-acclaimed Ishqiya (2010) that toplined Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah and Arshad Warsi. However, before she starts shooting, National Award-winning filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, currently working on Heroine, met her over work.

It was supposedly a closed-door meeting, and our well-placed sources have it that it had to do with a film that Madhur plans to direct with Madhuri as the lead, soon after he completes Heroine with Kareena Kapoor. Talk is that the project in question is the sequel to Madhur’s 2008 hit, Fashion. He is reportedly planning it with UTV, the producers of his first ramp outing. It’s said that if everything works out well, Fashion 2 would roll in December next year. However, there is no confirmation on the project as yet.

“Madhuri and Madhur have been keen to work together ever since his first movie, Chandni Bar (2001) with Tabu as a bar dancer, released. And now that Madhuri is back in India for good, they might team up soon,” insists the director’s close aide. A while ago, Madhur had visited the sets of Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 4 that Madhuri was co-judging with dancer-actor Malaika Arora Khan and choreographer-director Remo D’Souza. He had said then, “If Madhuriji had not gone to US, I would have cast her in Fashion. She would have done justice to it.”

This time, when contacted, Bhandarkar didn’t deny meeting the National Award-winning actor, adding, “It’s too premature to talk about it (whether they’re working together in a film). Right now, I am only concentrating on Heroine. It’s going to be a challenging film for me.”

Madhuri, who has recently shifted back to Mumbai with her kids Arin and Ryan and husband Dr Sriram Nene, in the past has bonded well with Madhur, who will start shooting Heroine next month. She was his special guest at a screening of his rom-com Dil Toh Baccha Hai Ji. She had also launched the music of his National Award-winning movie, Traffic Signal (2007).

Industry is abuzz with news that Madhuri Dixit is planning to shift her base to India soon. The actor it seems had gone school hunting for her kids when she was in Mumbai the last time. She, along with her manager Rikku Rakeshnath, is said to have made inquiries about facilities, infrastructure and educational standards at various schools including builder Vickey Oberoi’s educational institution. She has already bought a new home in the city and is in talks with Vishal Bharadwaj for the Ishqiya sequel. Film Career

Madhuri Dixit started her career in 1984, with the film ’Abodh’, offered to her by Rajshri Productions. The film failed to create any ripples at the box office and was forgotten soon. Thereafter, she was seen in a number of unnoticeable films, like Awara Baap and Swati. It was only in 1986 that she was discovered by Subhash Ghai, who gave her a small dance sequence in ‘Karma'. Though the dance sequence was edited out in the final cut, Ghai promised to give Madhuri better roles in the future.

He also kept a condition, that Madhuri will stop doing tiny roles in insignificant films. She agreed and Ghai ended up giving Madhuri, first, ‘Uttar Dakshin', and then, a proper launch in ‘Ram Lakhan' (1988). However, before Ram Lakhan could make it to the box office, Madhuri’s ‘Tezaab’ hit the theaters. Her dance sequence in the film, ‘Ek, do, teen’ took the nation by storm and established Madhuri in the top league of actresses. ‘Tezaab’ went on to complete a golden jubilee and was one of the biggest hits of the year.

Madhuri’s superb performance in ‘Tezaab’ and ‘Ram Lakhan’ was followed by her excellent act in ‘Dil’ (1990). The film not only got her the first Filmfare Award of her career, for Best Actress’, but also established a rapport with Indra Kumar. In the coming years, she starred in two hit films by Kumar, ‘Beta’ (1991) and ‘Raja’ (1995). The first half of 1990s saw Madhuri delivering a hit almost every year. In 1996, she was seen in ‘Prem Granth’, a film that bombed at the box office, but managed to win her critical acclaim. She starred in a number of films the same year, but none of them were successful. Just when critics were planning to write her off, ‘Dil To Pagal Hai’ (1997) happened. The film was not only a blockbuster, but also got her Filmfare Award for ‘Best Actress’. The same year, she was also seen in Prakash Jha's 'Mrityudand', a film that established her as a serious actor and won her Best Actress awards at the Star Screen Awards & Sansui Awards.

The next major film for Madhuri Dixit came in 2000, Pukar, which also bagged her IIFA Best Actress Award. The same year, she was seen in Gaja Gamini (2000), made by M.F. Hussain, who considers Madhuri as his muse and the embodiment of womanhood. The film saw her representing the various forms and manifestations of womanhood. Though it was not a commercial success, the film did get her critical acclaim. The year 2002 saw Madhuri starring in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's ‘Devdas’.

The film was also featured at the Cannes Film Festival and won Madhuri Filmfare Award as well as Star Screen Best Award, for Supporting Actress. This casually complex love affair between a destitute, helpless working girl and a local henchman who both live in a shanti town in Mumbai suburbs works mainly secondary to the chemistry between its two lead stars who both come up with spontaneous performances.

Madhuri as the vulnerable young woman who works as a domestic maid finds herself a prey in a pedantically sexist society after her grandfather sudden demise, she is totally convincing from the frivolous young working class woman to the bereaving daughter and the angry young woman who is a victim in a male dominated society

The only person who offers her protection is a local gangster brilliantly played by Mithun Chakraborty who is simultaneously torn apart by his empathy and attraction to the damsel in distress, he portrays himself with subtle restrain and his speechless performance is the hallmark of the movie where he converts the scornful woman who loathes his illegitimate lifestyle to a young woman who starts to initially respect and ultimately love the very pinnacle of her hate.

The conversion is mutual and very lyrical as it is expressed by cinematic language instead of words and the movie evolves through some of the best acting seen on Indian screen between the two main characters sharing the screen.

The final outcome is of no consequence as the theme is about mutual respect in a relationship earning ultimate love rather than simple physical attraction and infatuation and the script and acting succeed in conveying the message .

It is a delight to see the screen chemistry between two great natural artistes like madhuri and mithun and it is both rewarding and refreshing to see a Bollywood movie where a mature love affair is described in a totally natural environment rather than the fairy tale classics with huge mansions and Gucci dresses endorsed wit Porsches and Swiss locales.

For once this love live almost pulls it off but is marred by a silly and totally irrelevant comedy track between devan verma -aruna irana which can be easily edited out as it deserves to be chopped out of this love classic by the director who seems to have been under pressure to include it for commercial demands ,its totally disgraceful and irritating in a movie which can easily be called a love classic minus the silly intervention .

Definitely a watch for the thawing affections bestowed by madhuri on the callous and savage gangster, mithun who is smitten with love and inspired by faith and honesty of a vulnerable young woman to a rehabilitation only true love can aspire to, this movie treads a love line scorching with fire and succeeds in crossing it without getting burnt or blistered ,which is a rare achievement for bollywood.

A love story from the shanty towns of India between two very unlikely characters which will thaw some cynical critics yet a tribute to both mithun and madhuris talents captured simply without any indulgent melodrama or production numbers.

Bollywood has conquered the hearts and minds of people even in those countries whose governments have long been hostile to India. When the Pakistan government recently banned the telecast of Bombay films to Pakistani homes, Pakistan's cable operators went on strike and forced their government to withdraw the ban. This, at a time when the Indian and Pakistani governments were locked in serious conflict over the issue of cross-border terrorism and had severed even normal diplomatic ties. Even at the height of Indo-Pak hostilities, Bollywood films were still being smuggled into Pakistan and were playing in the homes of army generals as well as government ministers. Bombay film songs can be heard booming loudly out of the jeeps of police officers as well as from ordinary buses, taxis and auto-rickshaws. At the time of the Lahore Bus Yatra, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee was reported to have been received by a group of young Pakistanis with the following chant: "Madhuri de do, Kashmir le lo." (Take Kashmir, but give us Madhuri.)

The Bombay film industry produces around 900 films a year - more popular entertainment than any other film centre in the world. And yet, unlike Hollywood, Bollywood did not start off with global aspirations. Hollywood spends a good deal of money and energy capturing world markets. Parinda marked Vidhu Vinod Chopra´s entry into mainstream commercial Hindi cinema. Looking at the present scenario of Hindi films, there are only a handful of directors who can combine technique, form, crisp storytelling, and an exciting cast to deliver an entertaining yet intense film, and Vidhu Vinod Chopra proves that he belongs in that list with this film. Chopra has chosen to taken on the often-repeated subject (at least nowadays) of the Mumbai underworld. However, the difference lies in the fact that he chooses to blend the raw intensity of the backdrop with the emotional front of the main protagonists. And he scores, mainly by not getting melodramatic with the emotional scenes and keeping the story moving ahead at a steady pace.

The story revolves around two brothers, Kishen (Jackie Shroff) and Karan (Anil Kapoor), who have spent their childhood growing up alone on the streets of Mumbai. In order for Karan to have a better upbringing and education, Kishen
joins Anna Seth (Nana Patekar). Anna owns an oil factory, but that´s a mere prop to cover up his dealings within the underworld. Karan is unaware of the fact that his brother is working for a gang. Inspector Prakash (Anupam Kher),
Karan´s best friend, is aware of Anna´s gang activities and wants to bring him to justice. Anna knows that Karan and Prakash are best friends, so he sets up the murder of Prakash when Prakash and Karan are supposed to meet after Karan´s arrival from America. Karan is devastated with the happenings, and is even more shocked to learn that his brother Kishen is a gangster, and that too working for Anna, the man responsible for Prakash´s murder. What follows is a gripping tale, filled with twists one after another, which ultimately lead to a nail biting and memorable climax.

The film´s true "heroes" are the technical crew and the captain, Vidhu Vinod Chopra. Binod Pradhan´s cinematography is probably the best in comparison to other films released around that time. He´s very successful in creating a mood that is necessary for a gripping drama, and which is also able to draw the viewer into the film. The background score is also praiseworthy - surprisingly so - mostly because Hindi films before the mid-1990´s lagged drastically in this department. The sets (Bijon Das Gupta) of Anna´s factory are very memorable, mainly due to the fact that quite a few memorable scenes also take place there. Renu Saluja´s editing for this film, remains her best work till date, she fetched a National Award for effort. Chopra´s biggest achievement in the film is that he´s able to combine technical finesse with a focused and gripping narrative along with some fabulous performances from his cast.

Anil Kapoor plays his role with conviction, and his biggest achievement is displaying the vulnerability of his character so perfectly. Jackie Shroff delivers probably one of his best performances with this film, which also won him is first Best Actor award. Anupam Kher, Suresh Oberoi, and Tom Alter do well in their brief roles. Madhuri Dixit, the only female character in the film, has a small role as Paro (Karan´s love interest and Prakash´s sister) yet still does well in the few scenes she has. However, the most interesting character in the film was Anna, and Nana Patekar fitted into the role like a glove. Nana delivers one of his best performances in this film as the fire-phobic gang leader. He´s extremely successful in blending the two diametric characteristics of Anna, intensity and insanity.

The film also consists of quite a few memorable sequences. The first one that will probably pop into anyone´s mind who´s seen the film is the climax. Anupam Kher´s murder is also shot well, and Chopra´s touch of symbolism is present in the hordes of pigeons flying around. R. D. Burman also gave a memorable composition, "Tum Se Mil Ke", rendered nicely by Asha Bhosle and Suresh Wadkar. However, the songs do pose as a hindrance in the narrative. Even though there are only four songs in the film, the film could´ve done without any of them. The "shaadi" song between Anil and Jackie towards the pre-climax is not necessary at all. However, given the commercial pressures directors at the time (and even today) were put under, it´s not a big flaw.

Parinda is a gripping drama, which is also emotional at the same time, and will always be remembered as one of the best films made in its genre.

When Madhuri came to know about this gesture of her biggest fan, with her killing smile she said, ”I feel very flattered indeed!” The artist, who claims to have watched the blockbuster Hum Aapke Hain Kaun 67 times, has reserved 194 seats for the 1400 hrs (local time) show at the Lamcy Cinema on the day.

Noted film actress Madhuri Dixit’s admirer Pappu Sardar has done it again.

The ‘dhak-dhak’ girl’s fan who has been celebrating her birthday religiously for years now- sometimes with the physically challenged at Jamshedpur-based Cheshire Home or at the Old Age Home- now wants to give Rs 1.75 lakh to the Haryana government as payment for a plot of land at Panchkula, which was given away by chief minister Bhajan Lal to the actress at government rate.

Not ready to listen to any logic Pappu is angry with the Haryana government for sending a notice to the actress for paying the amount. “It is not that she will not be able to pay, but I appeal to the Haryana government to accept my offer through the media,” he argued. Later, he said the plot of land could be used as an old age home or a home for the disabled, he added.

According to Pappu, newspaper reports suggest that Bhajan Lal had offered a plot of land to Diksit at a government rate of Rs 2.35 lakh, of which she had already paid an initial amount of Rs 60,000. On February 15, this year, the Haryana government reportedly served a notice to Madhuri asking her to pay up the remaining Rs 1.75, failing which, the land would be allotted to somebody else. Donning a ‘Devdas kurta’ with images of Shahrukh and Madhuri, Pappu says that this will make him very happy for if he can do something for somebody who is his inspiration and who made him what he is today. No regrets if Madhuri has not once acknowledged his existence or the good work he is doing in her name.

“We pray to God and make many offerings in His name, but is it necessary that god reciprocates?” he asked. Pappu who used to celebrate Madhuri’s birthday by offering free plates of ‘chaat’ to the residents of the Steel City, now spends his time on the occasion at the Cheshire Home and has even donated a park for children of the home. The Madhuri fan also celebrates ‘rakhi’ at the home and with senior citizens at the old age home.

But Pappu would not like his inspiration to join politics. “Actors should expose politicians and not run after politics,” he said.

Madhuri: Padma Shri is my hard work!

Madhuri Dixit received Padma Shri for her contribution to Indian cinema and the former Bollywood diva says the honour is a result of her hard work and honesty.

"It's always a wonderful feeling to have your work honoured. One has worked so hard for so many years. The Padma Shri is a culmination of all my hard work and honesty. I think I'm being honoured for doing my work sincerely," Madhuri said.

Madhuri's children are in the US with her in-laws and her parents.

"They're all there. I guess my kids are lucky to have three sets of parents. My husband was here with me to share this moment. He left on Sunday," she said.

Did Madhuri's children share her excitement about the award?

"Not the younger one. He's only three. Too young to understand, but my five-year-old son kept asking me why I was getting this award. I told him it was because I did movies in India for many years. 'You did movies. Why? Why do people call you Dixit?' he asked me.

"I think he's finally getting to know that his mom who cooks meals and puts them to bed had a life beyond the home and kids before marriage," Madhuri said.

Bollywood's former diva admits it's hard to bridge the gap between the life she has now in the US and her long and successful innings in the film industry.

"I've gotten used to a life with my husband and kids. And to leave them behind in the US and come to Mumbai to work is tough. Although our parents take really good care of the kids, Ram and I still worry about what's happening back home when we're in India," said the actress.

She ruled the Hindi film industry in 1980s and 90s and churned out greatest hits like Tezaab, Ram Lakhan, Beta, Dil, Saajan, Khalnayak, Dil To Pagal Hai and Devdas.

Madhuri says the fact that back home people still want to see her on screen makes her happy.

"It is wonderful to know that people still think about me in my home country, although I don't live here any more. That they still want me back, it makes me feel very wanted," the actress added.

Last time Madhuri was in the country, it was for the release of her comeback film Aaja Nachle. The film didn't work, but she says its failure wasn't a blow to her.

"I did my part sincerely. And I did everything I could. So did the whole team. I've worked in this field long enough to know 'you win some, you lose some'. Sometimes you feel everything is going right and the end product still falls apart. It's okay," she said.

So what is she doing to rectify her fans' sense of disappointment?

"Is that your way of asking if I'm doing another movie? Next time I'll ask my fans what they want to see me do on screen. The fact that I did a part for a woman specially written for an actress my age was a triumph. I'm not in India to sign another movie, not this time. I came just to receive the Padma Shri," Madhuri said.

After the Padma Shri, Madhuri is staying back in Mumbai to catch up with family friends and a whole lot of personal work.

"I do have a life beyond movies," she laughed.

I finally touch on the Madhuri Dixit aura undiminished by time, marriage, motherhood and the failed comeback vehicle.

"I never thought of what you call an aura. For me this life as a wife and mother was what I dreamt of almost all my life."

Thank God, she did at the right time.

"What's the right time?" she quipped. "If you mean the right time to have kids then let me remind you a 63-year-old woman had twins. Nothing is impossible at any age any more. As for me, I had always said if I meet the right person I wouldn't think twice about giving up my career. And that's exactly what I did. I never planned anything in life," she said.

The Diwan is able to find her during a Mela and takes several men, sweetmeats, jewelry and clothing to propose to a delighted and disbelieving Balakram and his wife. She sets out to oppose this marriage, while Rajkumar will leave no stone unturned to marry Rajkumari. The stage is set for mother and son to decide whether it is in their best interest to include someone in the family, who has killed a husband and a father respectively. Anil Kapoor is above average, Naseerudeen Shah is hilarious and excellent at the same time, and Madhuri is astonishingly beautiful as well as a wonderful actress. Reena Roy has a well-suited role and Farida Jalal has a short but nicely played role. LP's music is his best in a while. Direction is terrible. Dances and choreography are okay. Cinematography is outstanding.

So Ram's lovely girlfriend Ganga (Madhuri Dixit) volunteers to go undercover, to trap Ballu and help restore Ram's reputation. Things get more complicated, however, when Ballu falls for her, and she finds that she isn't entirely immune to his charms. Will her feelings for Ram win out in the end, or will she spending time behind bars with Balu? I watched this film because it got one vote for Sight and Sound's once-a-decade list of the best films ever made, probably the only mainstream Bollywood movie ever to have achieved that distinction (though Satyajit Ray's works receive a number of votes). It's got everything and a bag of chips. I'm not kidding, if you like drama and music you should definitely not just see this but buy it as well. It also has a really good message too. The acting is superb and the special effects are up to par with the most sophisticated in the world. An incredible, amazing story of a Villain in search of Love. Sanjay Dutt as never before-!! Jackie Shroff never so strong-!! Madhuri Dixit's one of the best performances-!!!

This story revolves around Malhar Gopaldas Agnihotri, a out-of-work actor, poor, and dependent on his father, who is heading for retirement. Malhar knows that he can act, very well indeed, all he needs is some encouragement, and some money. He gets neither. His father is abusive, and even gets physical with him openly in front of all the neighors, and even the neighborhood. Malhar loves a young lady named Apoorva Choudhury, but his affections are mis-applied, as Apoorva only regards him as a friend, and she loves Nihal Joshi, a Police Inspector. Frustrated at the lack of love and encouragement, Malhar takes recourse in an exercise, an exersise that will put him in direct confrontation with the law, as it starts with murder.

Madhuri Dixit says yoga good for stamina

Bollywood's former leading lady Madhuri Dixit depends on yoga for energy, and balances it with a workout at the gym, jogging and a sensible diet, a news report said on Tuesday.

Dixit, 39, is currently in Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, to start shooting for her comeback movie, produced by well-known Bollywood filmmaker Yash Chopra.

``The idea of working out for me is a balanced act. Yoga gives me stamina,'' she told the Mumbai Mirror newspaper. ``Trust me, it's difficult to look beautiful after delivering two babies.''

One of Bollywood's most sought-after stars in the 1990s, Dixit stopped acting after marrying a U.S.-based Indian surgeon in 1999. They have two young sons.

Her last hit movie, released in 2002, was ``Devdas,'' in which she played a courtesan in a saga of doomed love.

Bollywood has become competitive, Dixit said.

``In our time, when we started our careers, we were raw. Nowadays actresses are well-groomed and perfect right at the outset,'' she said.

``The industry has become ruthless. Either you are perfect or you are out,'' the daily quoted her as saying.

Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit will play the role of Indira Gandhi in a two-part biopic directed by Indian-origin filmmaker Krishna Shah which may also feature Hollywood actors Tom Hanks and Tommy Lee Jones.

According to Shah, Madhuri Dixit has been picked to play the lead role in one of the films titled 'Mother: The Indira Gandhi Story'. Oscar-winning actress Helen Mirren is in talks to reprise her role as Queen Elizabeth II while Hanks and Jones are being lined up to play Lyndon B Johnson and Richard Nixon. British actress Emily Watson has been chosen to play Margaret Thatcher and Albert Finney is expected to take the role of Peter Ustinov, who was in New Delhi waiting to meet Gandhi when she was killed.

The film, seen as a major collaboration between Hollywood and Bollywood, will have a budget of 40 million pounds, and are due to begin filming in April in India, UK, Russia and the US, the Daily Telegraph reported. "This is the project of my life, both in its scale and the subject. I have been working on the script for over two decades and it is simply a story that has to be told. It took me years to find a way into her story, but I found it with her role as a mother both to her family and to a nation with its teeming millions. Indira was India," Shah said. "The story is of how Indira is a mother in every aspect of her life, and how she used her instincts, compassion and tough love to hold the nation together ultimately ending with her violent death and martyrdom to the cause of national unity.

The centrepiece of the first film will be a 30 minute war sequence portraying India's 1971 war with Pakistan featuring big budget special effects and the emergence of Gandhi as India's "Goddess of War". The film will be in Hinglish and is scheduled for release at the end of 2010. "The films will chart her life from being a shy housewife who stumbled upon the role of Prime Minister, through leading her country to victory in the 1971 War with Pakistan, to her commitment to secularisation, women empowerment and the backward classes," the director said.

The second film will portray Gandhi's efforts to unite India, the rise of her son Sanjay Gandhi and ends with her assassination at the hands of her own Sikh bodyguards in 1984. Shah hoped the collaboration between the two industries will make tie-ups more commonplace in the next decade. "The distinction between the two is now starting to blur. Bollywood is starting to shift its outlook, which is a hugely positive move and to diversify is the way forward for Indian cinema," he said. Shah's direction credits include films like 'Hard Rock Zombies', 'American Drive-In', 'Cinema Cinema' and 'Shalimar'.

The 42-year-old Dixit is known for her roles in blockbusters like 'Beta', Tezaab', 'Dil' and 'Devdas'. Her last Bollywood film was 'Aaja Nach Le', which did not do well at the box-office. She lives in the US with her doctor husband Shriram Nene and two sons Arin and Raayan.

Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan is planning to produce a Broadway show based on historical dancer Amrapali, with actress Madhuri Dixit playing the lead.

"Amrapali is very famous abroad. We are planning to start a Broadway show based on her. Our talks are on and if everything goes as per plan then Madhuri Dixit will play the main character," said Saroj.

"Javed Akhtar will write the lyrics and Feroze Khan will direct it," she added.

Saroj, who has worked with famous Bollywood actresses like Sri Devi and Karishma Kapoor, has always professed sharing a special bond with Madhuri.

It was Chief Minister Mayawati who initiated the ban on Aaja Nachle. She had objected to certain lyrics: Bazar mein machi hai maramar; bole mochi bhi khud ko sunar, (There is so much chaos in the market that even a cobbler is calling himself a jeweller) which she maintained would hurt Dalit sentiments all over the country. It was also reported Mayawati had told the Prime Minister to impose a nation-wide ban on the film all over the country. But inadvertently she seems to have the given the film a huge boost.

The day the film released most people in small towns and the villages bordering the small towns in UP had not even heard of Aaja Nachle. But once the ban was imposed, people rushed out of their homes to buy the CDs. One of the vendors of pirated CDs speaking on condition of anonymity maintained he was able to double the rate of CDs in the span of a few hours.
And even three weeks after the film has been released, the music is a big hit. While the official sales for CDs may not touch an all-time high, the pirates are still doing great business. And two numbers from the film; the title song Aaja Nachle as well Show Me Your Jalwa are being played in buses, three-wheelers, as well as the local paan shops.
And given the curiosity value people are gradually making their way to theatres to see the visualisation of their favourite numbers. The ticket sales in the third week are better than those in the second week. So this time round Mayawati seems to have done the Chopras a huge favour.

What is the film is about:

Dia (Madhuri Dixit) is a small girl who grows up in Shamli. But she is one of those people who refuse to be tied down. And she has one great passion, dance. Her parents don't seem to understand her at all. Luckily for her, she has a mentor, a guru, who gives wings to her dreams and gives her the courage to soar. Acting on a whim she breaks all ties with her parents and takes off for New York. Despite a failed relationship, she rebuilds her life and is happily settled in New York. But one final day Dia's peaceful existence is shattered and she gets a call which necessitates her return to Shamli.

And she returns to a town where the very mention of her name is taboo. The town itself is undergoing a metamorphosis. Land grabbers plan to demolish the dance school with the intention of building a mall. And Dia has to bring together the entire town, overcoming prejudice, ridicule and hostility so that she can save her beloved institution and keep her guru's dream intact.

What we liked

Just about everything. After Chak De! India and Bheja Fry this film is the third surprise of 2007. For a change, this is a film which has not been made strictly for multiplex audiences. It will appeal to many especially people in small towns.

All the Characters have been well fleshed out. There is Kunal kapoor, the low life who only uses his muscle power, Vinay Pathak the intrepid government official, his wife Sushmita Mukherji who thankfully has not been made to over-act. The pace of the film is excellent especially in the first half. Konkona Sen Sharma is her usual ebullient self. AfterLaaga Chunari Mein Daag, she and Kunal have been cast together again and they are quite a lethal combination.

Madhuri Dixit still rocks. The casting is perfect because there is nobody else who could have carried off this role with the grace and aplomb that she has. It's her film through and through.

After seeing the film you realise that rumours about Madhuri not liking the film are just that, rumours. No actress could have asked for a better comeback vehicle than Aaja Nachle.

The songs have been well picturised and will steadily climb the charts in the next few weeks. The music is the kind that gradually grows on you.

Excellent compositions especially in the dance sequences, but that was only to be expected as this first- time director is a cinematographer of some repute.

Dia's daughter Radha who looks and acts as a real child and not like plastic cut-outs which you have seen in Ta Ra Rum Pum.

Akshaye Khanna makes quite an impact despite the minuscule size of his role.

And over and above everything else, the dialogues and the humour is what takes the cake. Jaideep Sahni manages to evoke laughter from the audience every few minutes despite the basic storyline of the film being very grim.

What we didn't like:

The second half of the film could have been shortened slightly. It does tend to drag a little bit.

Konkona's costumes through the final dance drama. Most of her outfits look like she was wearing embellished nighties.

The choreography could have been better. It tends to get a bit repetitive at times.

We recommend: Watch this film if you like Madhuri Dixit. And we recommend it even more in case you haven't liked her work so far. This is one film where it's practically impossible not to like her.

Madhuri Dixit made a humble beginning with the Rajshris. The film was called Abodh and had the then Tollywood (Calcutta) superstar Tapash Pal cast as her hero.

The film bombed and Madhuri's future in Bollywood did not seem too bright. Filmmaker Subhash Ghai wasn't detracted though. He always said that Madhuri had the potential to be the number one and maintained at that.

Ghai did not give up on the Maharashtrian beauty and re-introduced her in Ram Lakhan. The film succeeded in exposing Madhuri's beauty and people dubbed her as the reincarnation of Madhubala.

The film that cut the ice and established Madhuri in the big league was N Chandra's Tezaab. The film was a huge success and the Saroj Khan-choreographed 'Ek do teen' entered the hallmark of extremely popular dance numbers. The item with a liberal dose of jhatkas not only propelled Madhuri towards stardom, it also established Saroj Khan as a hot dance director.

After Tezaab, producers and directors waited for months to let Madhuri's dates coincide with Saroj's. Meanwhile, Subhash Ghai was still carving out a strategy to present Madhuri as the successor to the then reigning queen Sridevi. Khalnayak fulfilled his dream. Madhuri became the next super girl with 'Choli ke peeche'.

The Film is based on a short story by Hindi litterateur Prem Prakash, Deepti is

just finalizing the other cast members and screepting. Well it would be great experience

Born on the 15th of May 1967, Madhuri Dixit is among those Indian actresses who became the predominant face of Bollywood for almost a decade between the 1980s and 1990s. Coming from Maharashtra, Madhuri was initially more inclined towards the sciences and wanted to be a micro-biologist. However, as her dance training started attracting her, showbiz became her dream. Madhuri's first Bollywood movie was Abodh in 1984. The film was minorly successful and got Madhuri roles in a number of other films. Despite many roles, Madhuri hit success only four years later, in 1988, when she acted in Tezaab opposite Anil Kapoor. The Anil-Madhuri jodi was worked so well that the duo acted in several films together including Ram Lakhan, Kishen Kanhaiya and Beta. Madhuri's next big movie was Dil in 1990 opposite Aamir Khan. The film went on to become the biggest hit of the year and it got Madhuri her first Filmfare award. The first half of the nineties is when Madhuri reached her peak. She did Saajan in 1991, Beta in 1992 (Madhuri got her second Best Actress Filmfare award for this film), Khalnayak in 1993, and Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in 1994. Family drama Hum Aapke Hain Kaun remains one of the biggest hit of Bollywood, and got Madhuri her third Filmfare Best Actress award. Madhuri had a relatively unsuccessful 1996, with only two releases, Prem Granth and Rajkumar, both of which bombed at the Box Office. However, in 1997, Madhuri teamed up with Shah Rukh Khan and Karishma Kapoor for the hugely popular Dil To Pagal Hai. In 1999, Madhuri finally tied the knot with NRI doctor Shriram Nene. As he practiced in Denver, she divided her time between India and the US for a few years. Though she continued to act in films regularly, major success eluded Madhuri till 2002, when she paired up with Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai for Devdas, where she played Chandramukhi. She got the Filmfare award for Best Supporting Actress for this role. In 2003, Madhuri gave birth to her elder son Arin and in 2005 to Raayan. After she became a mother, she quit acting and moved permanently to Colorado. Madhuri made a comeback to Bollywood in 2007 with Aaja Nachle. In 2008, Madhuri Dixit was awarded the Padma Shri by the President of India for her contribution to Indian cinema. As of now, Madhuri is considering signing Prakash Jha's next film opposite Ranbir Kapoor. Madhuri began her Bollywood journey in 1984 with the film Abodh. After Abodh, she acted in a number of films for the next three years, but got only minor success.

The first Madhuri Dixit film that made it big was Dayavan in 1988, where she starred opposite Vinod Khanna.

The year 1988 turned out to be big for Madhuri as that was also when she acted in the hit film Tezaab opposite Anil Kapoor. The film got her the first of her 15 Filmfare nominations. Anil Kapoor and Madhuri Dixit became a popular on-screen couple and did a number of films together.

In 1989, Madhuri acted in Kanoon Apna Apna opposite Sanjay Dutt. The film also starred Bollywood stalwarts like Dilip Kumar and Nutan.

Also in 1989, Madhuri acted in Tridev. This was an early multi-starrer film with actors like Sunny Deol, Jackie Shroff, Naseeruddin Shah and Sangeeta Bijlani in leading roles.

Madhuri got her first Filmfare Best Actress Award for the 1990 film Dil opposite Aamir Khan. The film was a major hit, and the song khambe jaisi khadi hai topped the charts for weeks.

In 1991, Madhuri proved her acting credentials once again by starring in the horror flick 100 Days.

One of Madhuri's biggest hits, Saajan, came 1991. Apart from Madhuri, it starred Salman Khan and Sanjay Dutt. This was also the time she was rumoured to be dating Sanjay Dutt.

In 1992, Madhuri teamed up with Anil Kapoor once again for Beta. This role got her her second Filmfare Award in the Best Actress category.

Madhuri delivered another superhit in 1993 along with Sanjay Dutt. This was Khalnayak. The hit song Choli ke peechhe kya hai is from this movie.

The year 1994 was big for Madhuri as she acted in a number of hit films. One of them was the dark thriller Anjaam. This was the first time she worked with Shah Rukh Khan, with whom she did a number of hit films later.

The biggest hit of Madhuri's career, and one of Bollywood's most popular films, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun came in 1994. A family entertainer, this film won Madhuri her third Filmfare Award in the Best Actress category. She was also nominated in the same category for her role in Anjaam.

In 1995, MAdhuri worked with Anil Kapoor's brother Sanjay Kapoor in Raja.

After a dull 1996, Madhuri jumped back into the limelight in 1997 with the film Mrityu Dand, where she acted along with Shabana Azmi.

Madhuri appeared in a number of hit films in 1997. She paired up with Shah Rukh Khan once again for Koyla.

The biggest hit of 1997 was the Madhuri-SRK-Karishma starrer Dil To Pagal Hai. Madhuri bagged her fourth Filmfare Award in the Best Actress category for this movie.

In 2000, Madhuri proved her dancing prowess yet again by matching steps with Prabhu Deva in Pukar. The film starred Madhuri, Anil Kapoor and Namrata Shirodkar.

As she had become the muse for the legendary artist M.F Hussain, Madhuri did the lead role in his film Gaja Gamini in 2000.

In 2001, Madhuri acted in the multi-starrer film Lajja.

Proving that married women could deliver hits in Bollywood, Madhuri acted in Devdas in 2002. Her role as Chandramukhi got her her fifth Filmfare Award, but this time, in the Best Supporting Actress category.

Also in 2002, Madhuri teamed up with SRK and Salman Khan for Hum Tumhare Hain Sanam. This proved to be her last film before she became a mother.

After a hiatus of five years, Madhuri came back to Bollywood in 2007 with Aaja Nach Le. Despite the gap, she managed to dance her way into the audience's heart.
